An introductory course on the use of satellite data in hydrology : basic principles and use cases over several African basins.   This 3 half-day course will introduce the basic concept of  satellite monitoring of some essential hydrological variables : rainfall ; river water height and discharge ; water surface extension ; soil moisture   ; variability of the total water stock inside a basin and also water color as an indicator of water quality and sedimentary transport. Satellite data is also useful for  producing land use and land cover maps, map the hydrographic network or topographical information. The current and future satellite constellation  usable for hydrology   and monitoring the water cycle will be presented, together with the instrument on board and measurement principles. The freely available products and data bases, and examples of the usage for flood or drought prediction,  and monitoring  water resources will be given with concrete use cases over several African basins (Niger ; Congo ; lake Tchad etc.). The integration of satellite data  (together with in situ data) into hydrological models will be discussed, with examples of pilot basins where these techniques are currently tested. Hands on based on open source material will be provided for the participants to practice and learn various techniques : data access and handling ; graphics, maps, end-user oriented indicators ; use of satellite data with a hydrological model.   Another Training
